Parent & Family Therapy with Shannon

Family therapy assesses and treats the needs of the family system as a whole.

It can help families to strengthen communication, redefine roles, and restore healthy boundaries in order to improve both individual and family functioning. Similar to individual therapy, family therapy begins with setting goals.

These goals are unique to each family, but may include:

  • Enhancing unhealthy or ineffective communication patterns
  • Redefining the roles of each family member
  • Evaluating the boundaries that operate within the family
  • Discussing trauma or changes that impact the entire family (i.e. relocation, death, natural disaster, the birth of a sibling, fostering/adopting children, etc.)
  • Domestic violence
  • Behaviour or emotional problems in children
  • Divorce
  • Understanding a medical or psychological diagnosis

Parents give so much to their children, that they often need a space of their own.

As such, I also offer parents a safe space where they can come to discuss their concerns, without their children present. Whether this is used individually or in conjunction with family therapy is dependent on the case and on the goals of those seeking therapy. Some topics that may be discussed in therapy with parents include:

  • Building communication with your child
  • Staying on the same page as your partner in relation to parenting
  • Supporting children with cognitive, developmental, behavioural, or mental health needs
  • Self-care
  • Parent-child attachment

Whether you are looking to refine techniques that are already working well for your family or you want support to deal with the difficulties that all parents and family systems face, I can help.
