Therapy for Individuals with Cognitive & Developmental Disorders

Individuals with cognitive and developmental disorders experience emotional challenges similar to those of everyone else. However, the psychological and emotional challenges that these individuals face are often misunderstood or overlooked.

If you or someone you know has a cognitive or developmental disorder, know that it is important that you or they are given the opportunity to work through these issues in a safe, understanding, and empathetic environment. Some issues that can be addressed in therapy are:

  • The need to be understood
  • The need to belong
  • The need for love and acceptance
  • Self-confidence
  • Social Skills
  • Anger, Anxiety, or Depression
  • Sexuality
  • Grief and Loss
  • Trauma
  • Behavioural Difficulties

Changes can be made to the therapeutic environment to ensure that the therapy is being completed at a level that is appropriate to the client. These changes can include:

  • The inclusion of the caregiver or an individual who knows the person well (with the consent of the client)
  • An emphasis on trust building and ensuring the client’s comfort
  • The use of clear, simplified, concrete language
  • The inclusion of active and interactive techniques for those with limited expressive language
  • Flexible methods
  • Increased processing time for the client
  • Sensory considerations, such as decreased lighting and stimuli

With the appropriate modifications, psychotherapy can be helpful and empowering for all clients. With experience working with individuals with cognitive and developmental disorders in residential, educational, and clinical settings, I am ready to meet all clients with the respect and dignity that they deserve.
