Couples Therapy with Shannon

As human beings, we all desire the ability to feel closeness and intimacy safely and invitingly. According to Sue Johnson, developer of Emotionally Focused Therapy,

“Love is not the icing on the cake of life. It is a basic primary need, like oxygen or water. Once we understand and accept this, we can more easily get to the heart of relationship problems.”

Are you seeking to improve, rebuild, or find resolutions to problems that have arisen in your romantic relationships?

Couples therapy can help to:

  • identify negative or dysfunctional patterns in your relationships
  • deal with underlying pain
  • help the couple to renew trust, respect, warmth, and support for one another
  • repair and/or strengthen emotional bonds and connections
  • decrease conflict
  • improve communication, connection, and intimacy.

When engaging with a couple, I choose to practice both the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. These are two of the most influential and empirically supported therapies used in couples therapy work. The Gottman Method offers a helpful structured assessment process and concrete tools, while Emotionally Focused Therapy holds great transformative power through the understanding of cycles and building of connection. The underlying goal of both of these practices is to increase security and emotional safety in relationships.

Couples counselling can involve both individual and dyadic sessions, depending on the needs of the relationship. When meeting with me, we will meet in a comfortable, confidential, and judgment-free space, where we will work towards building a relationship where you are comfortable sharing your personal struggles and stories with both me and one-another.
